Photo gallery: A rain-soaked 2019 Liege-Bastogne-Liege
This past Sunday, Jakob Fuglsang (Astana) took the biggest one-day victory of his career. But this year’s Liege-Bastogne-Liege will be remembered for more than the Dane’s breakout success.
It was a race lashed by heavy rain — particularly in the early stages — making for miserable conditions for all who took part. Thankfully for those of us watching from the dry warmth of our living rooms, wet races also make for great photos. And when it comes to great photos, Kristof Ramon and the Grubers — Ashley and Jered — are the best in the business. Check out their stellar shots from a rain-soaked 2019 Liege-Bastone-Liege below.
- Adam Yates on his way to the start. He would end up finishing fourth.
- Pre-race favourite Julian Alaphilippe takes a moment to centre himself before the race begins.
- Alaphilippe was well supported by his Deceuninck-QuickStep teammates all day, but didn’t have the legs when it counted.
- By the time Jakob Fuglsang made his move on the Cote de la Roche-au-Faucons, the rain had stopped.
- Michael Woods rocking a new look as he tries to follow Fuglsang. The Canadian was able to laugh at himself later.
- Neither Michal Kwiatkowski nor Alaphilippe were able to follow when Fuglsang made his move.
- Solo victory for Fuglsang after a terrific spring of near-misses.
- Greg Van Avermaet hasn’t had the best spring. He crashed on Sunday on his way to 52nd, nearly seven minutes down.
- Michael Matthews had a touch down too.
- The old-school way of drying shoes.
