Photo gallery: Into the mountains on week 2 of the 2019 Giro d’Italia

The 2019 Giro d’Italia took a little while to warm up but it’s firing on all cylinders now. On the second week the riders ventured in the high mountains for the first time and we saw plenty of action as a result. Virtually all of the GC contenders have been on the attack at one point or another, and the top of the leaderboard is being rearranged on a daily basis.

On the first rest day it looked like Primoz Roglic was a near-unbackable favourite. While he’s probably still the man to beat, he’s definitely looking less convincing than he once was. On stage 15 the Slovenian showed the first signs of weakness, getting dropped by his rivals — if only briefly — and then crashing on a late descent. That spill cost him some time and means he isn’t as well placed as he might have hoped.

Add to that an explosive Richard Caparaz (who leads the Giro by 47 seconds over Roglic), a wily Vincenzo Nibali (who only seems to be getting stronger), plus flashes of excellence from the other GC contenders, and we’ve got a terrific final week on our hands.

At a race as unpredictable as the Giro, just about anything could happen from here …
