At the Tour de France, the devil is in the mechanical detail – the custom parts and personal preferences of the riders, the 3D printed TT bars, and the sheer labour involved in the new era of road bike integration.

In the first tech video instalment of this year’s Tour de France, tech editor James Huang and Caley Fretz head to the pits at the Grand Depart in Brussels, gaining insight into the bikes of riders including Romain Bardet and Rohan Dennis.

The shifting landscape of tyre technology is also examined, with tubeless, tubular and tubed clincher tyres all being ridden this year – and, as James discovers, sometimes a mix on the same bike…
