Jumbo-Visma is investigating the possibility of adding a women’s team, Bicycling NL reports.

Richard Plugge, managing director of the Dutch WorldTour squad, pointed to the Boels-Dolmans squad, which is hunting for new sponsors at the moment, as a possible avenue towards building a new team.

“Perhaps the team will disappear, maybe it will restart, but riders will probably be released,” Plugge told Bicycling NL. “In any case, we have the impression that there is room for us to build up our own women’s team from the ground up.”

Boels, like Jumbo-Visma, is based in the Netherlands. The team counts Dutch stars like Anna van der Breggen and Chantal Blaak among its roster.

Bicycling NL reports that Plugge has been considering creating a women’s team for a while, but that the timing had not yet been optimal.

Plugge also noted that there was room for improvement in development efforts for younger riders.

“We often talk with the Academy [Jumbo’s under-23 team] about the achievement of boy’s dreams. But we are just as committed to girl dreams,” Plugge said. “The underlying idea is that we want to share our love and passion for cycling with more people in the Netherlands. You can do that through the Academy, but in the long run also with your own women’s team. “
