A driver in a private vehicle surpassed road closures and made it onto the closed racecourse in the final kilometers of Il Lombardia on Saturday, cutting off German Max Schachmann of Bora-Hansgrohe in a corner and causing him to crash into the side of the car and break his collarbone.

It’s as of yet unclear how the unauthorized driver and vehicle made it onto the racecourse.

The UCI is investigating, it said in a statement:

“Events on the UCI WorldTour calendar are of the highest level and require fully closed roads at all times. The UCI will consider lodging a complaint with the Disciplinary Commission against the event organiser RCS Sport.”

Schachmann had been riding near the front of the race, just behind the leading groups, when he caught the driver coming down the final descent of the race. The driver cut to the left and cut Schachmann off mid-corner. He slammed into the car and went down.

The German got up and finished the race in 7th place, but was later inspected at hospital, uncovering the broken collarbone.

It was the second major incident of the day, coming less than an hour after Remco Evenenepoel crashed off a bridge and broke his pelvis.
