Gallery: Heavy rain and KOM drama on stage 3 of the Tour de France
Let’s not sugar-coat it: stage 3 of the 2020 Tour de France was a bit of a yawn-fest until the last 10 km. Thankfully for us though, dull racing doesn’t mean dull photos. In fact, thanks to some stellar vistas and heavy rains that swept over the race, the photos from stage 3 are terrific.
Check out some fine work from the Grubers, Kristof Ramon and Cor Vos below.
- Peter Sagan indicating his best placing in a bike race in 2020.
- Yellow trim for race leader Julian Alaphilippe.
- Caption contest in the comments. Go.
- In the stage 3 breakaway: KOM leader Benoit Cosnefroy (Ag2r La Mondiale), Jerome Cousin (Total Direct Energie) and Anthony Perez (Cofidis).
- Just as the riders were about to hit the Col de la Faye, a short, intense storm rolled in.
- Great for photos, bad for bicycle cycling.
- Looks like fun.
- We feel you, Kasper.
- The bad weather soon passed. Side note: The Grubers are good at their job.
- In today’s edition of Rock Cycle Tips: this craggy number near Sisteron.
- And this.
- Cosnefroy had effectively lost the KOM jersey thanks to Perez taking enough points in the break. All Perez had to do was finish the stage and he would be in the “maillot a pois rouges”.
- But then Perez crashed. The Frenchman had suffered a puncture and was chasing back to the break on a descent when he collided with his team car.
- He was forced to abandon the race with a broken rib and a punctured lung, ensuring Cosnefroy remained in the KOM jersey at day’s end.
- Cousin was the last remaining rider in the breakaway and spent much of the stage leading the race solo. He was caught with 16.3 km to go.
- The magnificent citadel in Sisteron, close to where the stage was due to finish in a sprint.
- Caleb Ewan was way back with 300 metres to go but weaved his way through the pack to hit the front just before the line.
- It was a super impressive sprint from the Aussie who now has four stage wins in two visits to the Tour. More stage wins are surely coming as this race progresses.
