Tour de France gallery: Slovenia storms the podium on stage 13
After a couple days for the sprinters and the opportunists, the climbers and GC men got their chance on stage 13 of the Tour de France. Dani Martinez (EF) took an impressive win from the breakaway, beating two Bora-Hansgrohe riders in the process, while in the GC group Slovenia took command of the overall podium. Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) extended his lead with another unflappable performance while Tadej Pogacar (UAE-Team Emirates) surged to second overall.
It was a terrific day’s racing and the photos below reflect that.
- A large breakaway got up the road on stage 13 and the peloton let it go.
- It was a tough day in the mountains with plenty of climbing. The final ascent would be up Le Puy Mary, which offered stunning views for roadside fans.
- Speaking of roadside fans, there is a lot going on in this photo.
- With 14 km to go, Lennard Kämna (Bora-Hansgrohe) and Dani Martinez attacked from the break. They caught Kamna’s teammate Max Schachmann with 1.6 km to the line — Schachmann was leading the race solo at that point.
- The trio battled through the steep final kilometres …
- … with Martinez always looking the strongest. Schachmann was dropped with 700 metres to go leaving just two out front.
- Kamna started his sprint first, but Martinez easily overhauled him …
- … to take his first Grand Tour stage win. You’ll remember that Martinez won the recent Criterium du Dauphine too.
- Martinez’s teammate Hugh Carthy was also in the break and suffered through to the finsh.
- Likewise Dan Martin.
- In the group of GC favourites, race leader Roglic and Tadej Pogacar set off in the closing kilometres. Note Richie Porte (Trek-Segafredo) leading the charge from behind. The Aussie put in his strongest ride in the mountains in some time, and now sits ninth overall.
- The two Slovenians have looked the strongest at the Tour so far, by a comfortable margin.
- Roglic would finish just ahead of Pogacar to extend his overall lead, while Pogacar moved up to second overall.
- Richard Carapaz (Ineos) and Tom Dumoulin (Jumbo-Visma) battle through the final kilometres.
- An early crash left Romain Bardet with concussion. He finished the stage but is now out of the Tour.
- Solid crowds turned out to watch the finish.
- “How much further to go?”
- It’s not been Peter Sagan’s best Tour de France, or season for that matter. Can he still take green?
- Or will Sam Bennett win the points classification?
- Schachmann was awarded most combative for his great ride from the breakaway.
- Another day in yellow for Primoz Roglic. He’s looked completely at ease in this year’s race so far. Can anyone beat him from here?
