Mark Cavendish (Deceuninck-QuickStep) sprinted to victory on Tuesday’s stage 4 of the Tour de France, five years after his last Tour de France stage win and in a town that had already seen Cavendish triumph once before.

The 150.4 km stage from Redon to Fougères very nearly saw the sprinters denied a chance to battle for the win as lone escapee Brent Van Moer (Lotto Soudal) still held onto a gap into the last kilometer, but a hard-charging peloton overtook him a few hundred meters before the line.

Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Fenix) opened the sprint as the field caught Van Moer, but Cavendish exploded past him on his left and held on to take a convincing victory at the line, the 31st Tour stage win of his career.

Nacer Bouhanni (Arkéa-Samsic) took runner-up honors on the day with Philipsen in third. Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Fenix) finished safely in the bunch to retain his overall race lead.
