Rigoberto Urán, already a superstar in his home country of Colombia, is about to see his life played back on the small screen in dramatic fashion. The Colombian television network RCN Television is in the process of making a telenovela based on the life story of Urán.

Juan Pablo Urrego, who has starred in such tv shows as Crime Diaries: Night Out, El Final del Paraiso, and Surviving Escobar: Alias JJ, will pull on some old-school cycling kits to play the young up-and-coming Colombian cyclist.

Aspects of Urán’s life lend themselves to the drama of a telenovela. Shortly after Urán was introduced to cycling his father was assassinated by a paramilitary group. He signed for his first cycling team at the age of 16, moved to Italy at 19, and continued to work his way through the peloton, riding for teams like Caisse d’Epargne, Sky Procycling, and Omega Pharma-Quick Step before finally finding his home at what is now EF Education-Easy Post.

Uràn has worn jerseys and achieved podiums in Grand Tours, won a silver medal in the 2012 London Olympic Games, but ultimately won the hearts of cycling fans everywhere with his rockstar like attitude and fashion sense.

The telenovela is rumoured to be released sometime in 2022 and according to RCN’s Instagram account “Rigo will show us why we have to pedal for dreams.”
