Sonny Colbrelli is recovering well after collapsing at the finish of the opening stage of the Volta a Catalunya, while cardiac tests carried out last night showed “no signs of concern or compromised functions”.

The Italian rider was rushed to hospital after he lost consciousness and went into cardiac arrest at the finish line in Sant Feliu de Guíxols and medical personnel performed CPR on the 31-year-old Italian at the scene.

“After being admitted to Hospital Universitari de Girona Doctor Josep Trueta, Sonny Colbrelli was conscious and feeling okay,” his Bahrain-Victorious team said in a statement released the morning after the incident. “He has since been in touch with family and friends as he recovers at the hospital.”

Colbrelli will be tested further today to uncover more about why he collapsed after the stage yesterday, while the initial cardiac tests done at the hospital showed little cause for concern.

“He will undergo further tests today to discover the cause of yesterday’s incident. All cardiac tests carried out last night showed no signs of concern or compromised functions,” the statement concluded.

“All I remember is that I reached the finish line, took a bottle of water and then collapsed,” Colbrelli told La Gazzetta dello Sport of what he remembers of the incident.

“There was a void after that and then I woke up in the hospital. I don’t remember anything. I am now resting in the hospital and still being watched here. It was scary.”

It appears the episode hasn’t dampened his enthusiasm to get back to racing, however: “I’m already thinking about my return to the cycling peloton.”

Update:

Bahrain-Victorious have since released a further statement, confirming Colbrelli suffered from an unstable cardiac arrhythmia and describing their rider’s health as “good”.

“Following the end of Stage 1 of Volta a Catalunya, our medical team can confirm that Sonny Colbrelli suffered from an unstable cardiac arrhythmia that required defibrillation,” the statement read.

“The cause is still to be determined, and the Italian rider will undergo further tests tomorrow at the Hospital Universitari de Girona.

“The team would like to thank Borja Saenz de Cos – Emergency Nurse at Sistema d’Emergencies Mediques (Catalan Emergency Service) – for his prompt assistance at the finish yesterday and for supporting our medical staff in the management of the incident.

“Sonny Colbrelli’s clinical situation is good, and we wish him a prompt recovery.”
