RideLondon sportif crashes delay pro men’s race

Tom Boonen might have lead in the peloton to win the Prudential RideLondon Classic but he did so considerably later than planned.

Prudential RideLondon 31st July 2016

Two serious crashes in the amateur sportif earlier on Sunday forced organisers and police to stop the professional men’s race after 160km of racing, with riders left waiting for as much as half an hour.

“This was done on the advice of police on the grounds of public safety due to congestion in Dorking High Street of riders in the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100,” a RideLondon spokeswoman told The Guardian. “This was caused by a combination of the delay from the earlier stop when a rider required an air ambulance and other riders who were diverted at mile 44.”

Event organisers put two diversions in place during the sportif: one around the site of the first crash and the second to ease considerable delays following the first incident.

The riders involved in both crashes were taken to hospital, one in a serious condition after hitting a tree.
