Adopting a south to north orientation for only the third time in its history, details of next year’s Amgen Tour of California have been announced. The men’s event will begin on Sunday May 13 on Long Beach and then head from Ventura to South Barbara County on stage two and from King City to Monterey County (Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca) on day three. The following day will be a time trial in San Jose.
The race will then continue with stage five’s journey from Stockton to Elk Grove and then a journey from Folsom to South Lake Tahoe prior to the stage seven finish in Sacramento.
“Highlights of the men’s race will include the Queen Stage from Ventura to the summit of Gibraltar Road in Santa Barbara County, and a challenging mountain stage with an uphill finish at 6,500 feet elevation in South Lake Tahoe,” said owner AEG in a statement. Stockton and Long Beach are reappearing for the first time in 11 years.
The fourth edition of the women’s race will begin on Thursday May 17 with the Elk Grove stage. Day two is based at South Lake Tahoe and stage three in Sacramento. The race will be one day shorter than in 2017, which will likely be seen as a step backwards by many.
“Similar to 2017, the women’s overall will be contested on the high-altitude Queen Stage in South Lake Tahoe which features one of the biggest climbs in the UCI Women’s WorldTour,” said AEG, “while the sprinters will find their opportunities on the first and last stages of the race.”
