Anna van der Breggen has completed a perfect week for herself and her Boels-Dolmans team, winning the inaugural women’s Liege-Bastogne-Liege on Sunday to complete a trio of victories at the Ardennes Classics.
Van der Breggen won both the Amstel Gold Race and Fleche Wallonne with late solo attacks, and the Dutchwoman did the same again at Liege, attacking from an elite lead group with only a handful of kilometres remaining. And just as was the case at Amstel Gold and Fleche Wallonne, Lizzie Deignan (Boels-Dolmans) was second and Kasia Niewiadoma (WM3 Pro Cycling) was third.
It was 22-year-old Niewiadoma that again launched the winning move, attacking on the Côte de la Roche-aux-Faucons and forging an elite lead group of herself, van der Breggen, Deignan, Elisa Longo Borghini (Wiggle-High5) and Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio (Cervélo-Bigla).
Van der Breggen waited until 4km to go before punching away, opening up a gap, and soloing away to her four win of the year so far.
“It was such a tough race, and we have the advantage of being at the front with the two of us,” Van der Breggen said after the finish. “The cooperation fell through a bit at the top of Saint-Nicolas and that is where I went, since I had a little gap. It was at the top, so everyone was at their limit at that point.”
