by CyclingTips

Belgian professional Michael Goolaerts (Willems Veranda’s-Crelan) died after he collapsed at Paris-Roubaix.

Just over a week after the cardiac arrest which claimed the life of Michael Goolaerts, another young Belgium rider has passed away. According to HLN.be, Limburg amateur time trial champion Jeroen Goeleven was found dead on Tuesday by his father Danny.

“Our family is at our wit’s end,” he said. “This afternoon I saw our son Jeroen in his room. It is incomprehensible, we are in deep mourning. There are no traces of suicide, that is clear. A new, motivated youngster who inexplicably says goodbye.

“At a young age, it is a death that is being investigated. We already know that nothing will be found. with regard to the negativism around cycling that he has done so much. Goodbye ‘champion of Limburg,’ our world champion,” he said. Police have said that the initial indication from the police is that the death appears natural.

Meanwhile the website 3atholon.be has reported that 33-year-old triathlete Jan Coz died on Monday. “Jan was always easy to recognize, not only because of his bald head, but especially because of that sparkling look in his eyes and his ever-present smile,” said the website.

Separately, former pro Brian Vandborg has been saved by strangers after suffering cardiac arrest on a training ride.

Boels-Dolmans mechanic Richard Steege was saved by a Team Sky doctor after collapsing with heard issues.
