Anthony Giacoppo victorious in Tour of Japan prologue

Anthony Giacoppo (Avanti-Isowhey) has won the prologue individual time trial at the Tour of Japan and will wear the leader’s jersey into today’s first road stage.

Giacoppo completed the 2.65km course in 3:19 (47.9km/h) average, beating Carlos Alzate (UnitedHealthcare) by less than a second and Nariyuki Masuda (Utsunomiya Blitzen) by two.

In the eight editions of the Tour of Japan so far, Australian riders have won the prologue ITT on seven occasions. Brenton Jones won in 2015, Will Clarke won in 2014 and 2012, Michael Matthews won in 2010, Leigh Howard won in 2009 and Zak Dempster won in 2008.

The eight-stage UCI 2.1 race continues today with a 105km stage around Kyoto, which features six laps of a 16.8km circuit.
