by CyclingTips

Astana’s GC leader Fabio Aru suffered a knee injury in a crash while training at altitude in preparation for the upcoming Giro d’Italia in May.

“Fabio Aru, at the moment busy in the training camp ongoing in Sierra Nevada (Spain), last Sunday, while training with the teammates, suffered by an accident caused by a puncture and consequent explosion of the front tire,” a statement said.

“A part from some [road rash], Fabio suffered a blunt trauma to his left knee including the patella.”

The team said a subsequent evaluation, including a MRI, showed no fractures.

Aru is scheduled to race the Tour of Alps, from April 17-21), in preparation for the Giro. The team said that schedule is unchanged at the moment.
