Ashleigh Moolman wins the Emakumeen XXX Bira with final-stage victory

by CyclingTips

With one stage remaining in the Emakumeen XXX Bira, it appeared the Basque race was going to be won by Australian national champion Kat Garfoot (Orica-Scott). Her Orica-Scott team had dominated the race, winning three of the race’s four stages, and held the top three places on the overall podium. But fourth-placed Ashleigh Moolman (Cervelo-Bigla), at 34 seconds down, had other ideas.

Moolman attacked from a group of favourites on the famous Jaizkibel climb, the final ascent of the race, and opened up a lead in the roughly 10km that remained. The South African crossed the line 13 seconds clear of Annemiek van Vleuten (Orica-Scott) and 38 seconds ahead of Garfoot, enough to take the overall lead at the last possible moment.

Earlier in the weekend, van Vleuten won stage 4 in a three-up sprint against Nikola Noskovan (Bepink Cogeas) and Moolman. That victory gave Orica-Scott three consecutive stage victories (after wins to Amanda Spratt and Garfoot) and put the Australian-registered team in the box seat to win the race overall.
