Salary caps for pro cycling, Colombian tests positive: Daily News Digest
Known for its success in bringing through young riders, the Axeon Hagens Berman team has announced its final signing for 2018, the 19-year-old Portuguese rider João Almeida. He won the national junior road race and time trial championships in 2016, and also dominated that year’s Volta a Portugal de Juniores Liberty Seguros.
Almeida took all three stages, the overall classification and the points classification, and continued his momentum in 2017. Early on he took the final stage of Terre di Toscana plus stage 3 of the Tour of Mersin. In May, he was best on stage 4 at the Tour of Ukraine, paving the way for his youth classification success there.
“Joining Hagens Berman Axeon means a lot for me,” said Almeida. “I will become a professional and work with Axel and all of the staff; it’s a dream come true. I can’t wait for it!”
He joins six other signings for 2018, namely Thomas Revard, Mikkel Bjerg, Jasper Philipsen, Zeke Mostov, Cole Davis, and Maikel Zijlaard.
