Ben Hill suffers fractured vertebrae in Tour of Hainan crash

by CyclingTips

Australian rider Ben Hill (Attaque Team Gusto) is facing some time on the sidelines after fracturing two vertebrae on the penultimate stage of the Tour of Hainan.

Hill, a rider known for his attacking style and propensity for the breakaway, was attempting to bridge to the lead group with three other riders when a slippery corner saw the 27-year-old go straight off the road and into a ravine.

“We’ve had the medical report translated, and he has a bruised lung which is going to prohibit him from flying and definitely confirmed he has two fractured vertebrae — No. 6 and No. 8,” team owner Peter Shandon told Eurosport. “He is in the hospital and can’t fly for up to three weeks.

“We are trying to move him today to a private facility. The doctors are saying he should probably only have to stay in hospital for about 10 days and then they will move him to a hotel.”
