Benatti wins Tour of Denmark, stage 1

by Mark Zalewski

Daniele Benatti (Tinkoff) won the opening stage of the Tour of Denmark, escaping the peloton inside the final 10km with Mads Würz Schmidt (Virtu PRO – VéloCONCEPT) and easily winning the two-up sprint. Moreno Hofland (LottoNL-Jumbo) won the field sprint for third.

Inside 10km to go and two finish circuits remaining, two riders escaped, Benatti and Würz Schmidt. The two worked well together and built a nearly 30 second lead.

Into the final kilometre the two continued to trade pulls, with a small gap on the field. Inside the final 300m Würz Schmidt was leading, showing a true pain face, while a calm and cool Benatti settled in and rode his wheel.

After the final turn at 200m the 22-year-old could only watch as Benatti cruised past with no response possible, though clearly content to take second to a multiple-time Grand Tour stage winner.
