Bennett victorious on stage 2 of Czech Cycling Tour

by Shane Stokes

Following Thursday’s opening team time trial won by the Elkov – Author Cycling Team, Bora-hansgrohe responded to its second place by taking sprint victory on day two. Irish sprinter Sam Bennett proved quickest into Frydek-Mistek, beating Jan Tratnik (CCC Sprandi Polkowice), Rok Korosec (Amplatz-BMC) and the rest of the bunch.

The victory made up for his frustration at the European road race championships, where he had to be content with 11th. His triumph came after the day’s five-man breakway was hauled back, and saw Bennett finish several bike lengths clear on the uphill rise to the line.

“I didn’t feel too good during the day, maybe because it was really hot,” he said. “Schwarzi [Michael Schwarzmann] and Juraj [Sagan] did an amazing job to control the race. In the end, Pascal Ackermann delivered me so fast, I just had to go from 200-100m at full gas, then I already knew I got the win.

“I am really happy, because on a day the team puts in such an immense effort, the pressure is on to finish it off, but I did it in the end. We have to see how the race goes tomorrow, but if I can survive, there is a good chance to keep the yellow jersey also on the last stage.”
