The BMC Racing team took it’s first team win of the season, winning the opening team time trial of the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana, beating Team Sky and defending champion Wout Poels by 26 seconds on the 37.9 kilometres course from Playa Glea to Orihuela. The Quick Step Floors team finished in third at 49 seconds behind BMC.

With the win the young Italian Manuel Senni takes the race lead in his first win as a professional.

“We heard that we had set the second fastest time overall behind Team Sky at the 11km checkpoint, so we knew that we had to put in some hard work over the final part of the course and we did exactly that,” said Senni. “We put our heads down and gave it full gas to the line but we definitely didn’t expect to finish with a margin that big.

“On the run into the finish line I was sitting at the front, so before I knew it, I had crossed the line first. There wasn’t any plan for that to happen but I am super happy about it.”

Thursday’s second stage is 178.6km and will feature four mountain passes — the Alto de Maymo, Xixona, Benifallim and two passes over El Montgó — and will end in the town of Denia. The overall is likely to be decided on stage four with the only summit finish of the race.
