Boels-Dolmans has expressed its gratitude towards Dave Brailsford and Team Sky medical staff after its team mechanic, Richard Steege, had a heart attack last Monday.
As Boels-Dolmans riders were just about to set off for a post-Amstel Gold Race recovery ride, Steege collapsed at the team hotel. Brailsford and Team Sky medical staff, who were staying in the same hotel, resuscitated Steege after which the mechanic was taken to hospital.
“We are very grateful to the people at Team Sky and the hospital for acting so quickly and adequately,” says team manager Danny Stam. “Richard is with us in every race throughout the year and is a very important person in the Boels-Dolmans family.”
Steege has since woken up and is aware of his surroundings.
“We missed him the last few days, not only because he is so good at what he does for the team, but more importantly as a person,” continued Stam. “We hope that Richard will make a full recovery quickly and our thoughts were with him throughout the race on Wednesday in the Flèche Wallonne. Anna van der Breggen contributed her win to him. We will race with Richard on our thoughts again on Sunday.”
