Nacer Bouhanni on stage 4 of the Dubai Tour 2018

Having dropped out of Paris-Nice due to bronchitis and also having withdrawn from the Volta a Catalunya, Nacer Bouhanni appeared to be getting things back on track when he finished 12th in Sunday’s La Roue Tourangelle race.

However he is on the sidelines once again after dropping out of the opening stage of the Circuit de la Sarthe on Tuesday. The Cofidis sprinter withdrew after approximately 100 kilometres. His directeur sportif Jean-Luc Jonrond told Ouest France what happened.

“He got hypothermia,” he said. “He changed his clothes two times during the race, but he was wet. At one point he stopped. I suggested to him that he changes [clothes] and starts again, but he was frozen. He was shaking like a leaf. This is a big disappointment, for him as well as for us. He thought he was going to build up kilometres here and, why not, take a first victory.”
