Confidis’ sprinter Nacer Bouhanni will miss the Tour de France due to a hand injury he suffered in a fight with a drunken hotel guest the night before the French road race championships.

“I was awakened by strong bursts of a voice in the morning around three o’clock that seemed to come from the room next to me,” said Bouhanni. “My brother was awake. I tried to go back to sleep, but after an hour it was untenable. I got up and knocked on the door. ”

“A boy opened the door, holding a can of beer in his hand. I asked if he could stop and tried to explain that I had a championship in a few hours. He put his beer down, treated me like [expleative] and pushed me violently. My first instinct was to defend myself.”

“I had not seen that there were three other boys, all drunk. Later I knew [they] came from a wedding. There was a lot of hustle and the other riders also started to wake up. My brother was really scared.”

While unable to compete in the French championships, his team initially said he would recover for the Tour start. However, his injury was more serious and required surgery, taking him out of the race.
