A member of the British House of Lords, Lord Carlile, said in an interview with BBC Radio 4 that the terrorist attack in London was aided by the bicycle lane on Westminster Bridge, since it’s paint-only design offered “uninterrupted” access to the pedestrian walkway.
“We may have to look at the new traffic arrangements around Westminster, which have changed in the last few months and opened up a wide new cycle lane along which this vehicle travelled uninterrupted,” he said.
Christian Wolmar, a previous candidate for mayor of London, said Lord Carlile’s remark was an example of “extraordinary hostility to cyclists.”
“How can Lord Carlile think Westminster Bridge cycle lane made it easier to attack? Quite the opposite.”
London’s cycle lanes have been controversial for many years, with some government officials blaming them for many problems, including the increase in pollution. The place where the attacker crashed his vehicle is close to the location where British transport minister Chris Grayling doored a cyclist late last year.
