Calmejane wins fourth stage at Circuit Cycliste Sarthe

by Mark Zalewski

Lilian Calmejane (Direct Energie) won the fourth stage of the Circuit Cycliste Sarthe, coming across solo after attacking the leading group on the final climb of the finish circuit. Julien Simon (Cofidis) led in the chase group ahead of Jetse Bol (Manzana Postobon).

Calmejane’s win gives him the leader’s jersey from Movistar’s Alex Dowsett.

A break of seven riders included Nans Peters (AG2R La Mondiale), Paul Ourselin (Direct Energy), Armindo Fonseca (Fortuneo – Vital Concept), Kevin van Melsen (Wanty- Groupe Gobert), Sebastien Delfosse (WB Classic Vera AquaProtect), Leigh Howard (Aqua Blue Sport) and Julien El Fares (Delko Marseille Provence KTM). El Fares was eventually dropped to make the group six.

The stage finished with five finish circuits of 10.5km, crossing the finish atop the Mont des Avaloirs each time. Jeroen Meijers (Roompot – Dutch Lottery) bridged across to the break, but with the group closing in. His teammate Riesebeek joined and it reshuffled the lead group, with Calmejane, AG2R La Mondiale’s François Alexandre Geniez and Bidard along with Gregory Habeaux (WB Vera Classic AquaProtect) now on the front.

Eventually Calmejane attacked on the final lap, claiming his third win of the season 14 seconds ahead of the chasers.
