Cant, van der Poel win at Holly Cross Fortress

by Mark Zalewski

Sanne Cante (Enertherm-Beobank ) and Mathieu van der Poel (Beobank-Corendon) took wins at the Holly Cross Fortress on Sunday.

In the first lap of the women’s race Ellen Van Loy (Telenet Fidea Lions) took a lead, but the slippery conditions allowed Cant, LauraVerdonschot and Katie Compton to rejoin.

In the final lap Cant and Compton took the lead. The world champion put in an attack that gapped Compton, but the American champion was able to come back. However, Cant was too strong in the end and took the win.

In the men’s race van der Poel again showed his great form of late, attacking early. World champ Wout Van Aert (Veranda’s Willems-Crelan) was able to respond, and Telenet Fidea riders Tom Meeusen and Lars van der Haar were not far behind.

On the second lap Meeusen put in an attack, opening a gap on Van Aert and the others. Van der Poel was the one to respond to the move and rode away from the group all the way to the finish, with van der Haar in second by nearly 30 seconds.
