Chris Boardman, the 1992 Olympic pursuit champion, former Hour Record holder, and three-time wearer of the maillot jaune at the Tour de France, announced Sunday that his mother, Carol, had died after a collision with a motor vehicle while cycling.
Boardman announced the news in a post on Twitter. “In the early hours of Sunday morning, our mum, Carol Boardman, died from injuries sustained in collision with a car whilst out riding her bike in North Wales.”
A former racing cyclist, Carol Boardman gave up competitive cycling when Boardman and his sister, Lisa, were born, he wrote, “but she never lost her love of the bike or of competing.”
“Our mum was the most positive, outgoing person you could ever hope to meet and her generosity of spirit inspired everyone she met, Boardman wrote. “Wanting to share her passion for cycling, even well into her seventies, she often took groups of young novices out on their first forays into North Wales.”
CyclingTips offers its sincere condolences to Carol Boardman’s loved ones during this difficult time.
