Italian cycling great Mario Cipollini is highly critical of Italy’s lack of talent at the moment, saying in an interview with Il Giornale that Vincenzo Nibali is the only ‘talented’ rider for the country.
“We only have Vincenzo Nibali,” said Cipollini. “He is the only real talent at our disposal. As for the rest they are only extras.”
When asked about the Fabio Aru, Cipollini replied, “Give us a sign. We are here, we are waiting.”
Cipollini, a former world champion was asked about the current world champion Peter Sagan missing out on victory at Milano-Sanremo earlier this month.
“It happens. It is a cruel race. Moser and Saronni tried so many times but won only once. Moreno Argentin, who was one of the greatest Classics riders of all time, he never made it his own. Peter was only beaten by himself. He was too cautious. If only he had jumped a moment later.”
