Skujinš wins Coppi e Bartali stage, takes over lead

by Mark Zalewski

Toms Skujinš won the second stage of the Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali, giving Cannondale-Drapac its first win of the season. Arnold Jeannesson (Fortuneo-Vital Concept) and Matteo Busato (Wilier Triestina) led the group in seven seconds behind. Skujinš also takes over the race lead from Lilian Calmejane (Direct Energie).

“When we got to the final climb, the original break had been caught, and there was another lone rider away,” said Skuji?š. “Caja Rural picked up the pace quite considerably and one of their guys launched a monster attack. He was followed by two guys, and then another two bridged across.”

“I figured when it doubt, lead it out. I jumped from the bottom and never looked back.”

The breakaway of the day consisted of Massimo Rosa (Italy), Julen Amezqueta (Wilier-Selle Italia), Giacomo Berlato (Nippo-Vini Fantini), Jon Irizari (Caja Rural-Seguros RGA), Brice Feillu (Fortuneo-Vital Concept), Michele Scartezzini (MGKvis-Olmo) and Didier Santosque (Strongman).

Dimension Data and Sky drove the chase behind and brought the gap down. Feillu put in a solo attack on the finishing circuit, and was countered by David Lopez and Mattia Cattaneo. On the last climb of the Ville di Monte Tiffi the group exploded. Egan Arley Bernal, Rodolfo Torres and Jaime Roson went on the attack, but it was Skujins who put in the winning move.
