Coquard doubles wins as Quintana assumes lead at Route du Sud

by CyclingTips

Bryan Coquard (Direct Energie) won another field sprint at the Route du Sud, beating Stéphane Poulhies (Equipe Cycliste Armée de Terre) and Manuel Belletti (Wilier – Southeast). Later in the day Movistar’s Nairo Quintana spoiled a double win for the team, beating early-leader Sylvain Chavenel in the time trial and taking over the leader’s jersey.

The two-stage day began with a short but rolling 93km parcours. But only one KOM just 30km into the stage gave the sprinters plenty of time to organise for the finish.

The short 13.4km time trial meant there was little room for error. Chavenel posted an early fast time, 23 seconds ahead of second place for much of the day, and looked to be tough to beat. But Quintana clearly came to race, and bested the French rider by six seconds.

Quintana’s teammate Imanol Erviti took third.

The TT win gives Quintana the overall lead, and after attacking in a surprise breakaway yesterday it seems he is feeling fresh and going to be tough to beat.
