Coquard wins Route de Sud sprint

by CyclingTips

Bryan Coquard (Direct Energie) beat Arnaud Démare (FDJ) in a sprint to open the Route de Sud.

What was supposed to be a predictable stage with a flat parcours turned into a bit of a crazy stage early on with GC threat Nairo Quintana (Movistar) going in a breakaway with Quentin Jauregui (AG2R La Mondial). The two at one point had an advantage of more than 12 minutes before the peloton finally got onto terms.

With 50km still to go the pair’s advantage was down to around a minute. After the peloton brought them back Jonathan Lastra (Caja Rural – Seguros RGA) tried a move, but the sprinter’s teams were to have no more spoiler attempts.

Coquard took the sprint with ease and plenty of breathing room ahead of Demare and José Rojas (Movistar).
