Bryan Coquard (Direct Energie) won the morning road stage at Circuit Cycliste Sarthe ahead of Matteo Malucelli (Androni Giocattoli) and Clément Venturini (Cofidis) in the field sprint. Later in the day British time trial champion Alex Dowsett (Movistar) powered to the win in the time trial, taking over the race lead.

Coquard said he dedicated the victory to his friend and teammate Romain Guyot who was killed in a traffic accident last year.
Race leader and stage one winner Justin Jules (WB Veranclassic Aqua Protect) finished in fourth place and retained the overall lead heading into the afternoon time trial stage.
Dowsett bested his teammate Jonathan Castroviejo by eight seconds in the short 6.8km time trial. Arthur Vichot (FDJ) finished in third at ten seconds.
Dowsett leads Vichot by two seconds in the overall with two climbing stages remaining, including a summit finish tomorrow.
