Former Giro d’Italia stage winner Bart De Clercq has had a setback prior to the start of his first season with the Wanty-Groupe Gobert team, crashing heavily while training on Tuesday.
According to the team, which he has joined after a number of seasons with Lotto-Soudal, he suffered a subcapital fracture of the left femur.
The 31-year-old climber has been treated quickly, Dr. Toon Claes in AZ Herentals in Belgium operating on him on Tuesday.
“The fracture is heavy and required the placement of screws in the femur,” said team doctor Joost De Maeseneer. “It is difficult to estimate a return in competition. Normally Bart can only resume light training in about six weeks. Returning to competition is a matter of months.”
