Deignan sidelined following appendix removal

British champ Lizzie Deignan before the start in Briançon.

Former world road race champion Lizzie Deignan has been forced to limit her racing for the immediate future, undergoing surgery for appendicitis this week. She had been competing in the Boels Rental Ladies Tour when she became ill, and was operated on early on Thursday morning.

“I’ll be taking the rest of the season day-by-day at this point,” she said. “It’s not ideal but I’ll be alright. I appreciate the show of support.”

Deignan showed strong form last weekend, winning the GP de Plouay WorldTour event. She was ninth in the prologue of the Boels Rental Ladies Tour on Tuesday and had been tenth overall prior to her withdrawal. Teammates Anna van der Breggen and Chantal Blaak are fourth and seventh overall

“We’ll miss Lizzie in the race, but the most important thing is that she gets healthy again,” said Boels-Dolmans team manager Danny Stam. “It’s still possible she could race again this season, but that’s simply not something we know at this time.”
