Dylan Groenewegen (LottoNL-Jumbo) won a fast finish into Palm Jumeirah, taking the Dubai Tour’s first stage and the leader’s jersey. Magnus Cort Nielsen (Astana) crossed the line in second, followed by Elia Viviani (Quick-Step Floors).
The anticipated matchup between Mark Cavendish and Marcel Kittel never materialized, as both finished well back in the field, in 16th and 17th, respectively.
Quick-Step took control in the finale to set up Viviani, but a patient Groenewegen was able to come around.
“Quick-Step made it a very hard sprint by setting a high speed from far out, but I launched my sprint with 200m to go. It was very tight at the end but went in my favor,” Groenewegen said.
