Eddy Merckx: ‘Tour of Oman will be ridden’

by CyclingTips

In the wake of the cancellation of the Tour of Qatar, Eddy Merckx has said that the other major event he runs in the Middle East, the Tour of Oman, will continue. This was in response to a report by French sports daily L’Equipe that the Oman race was uncertain.

“The Tour of Oman will be ridden. No doubt about it,” he told Het Laatste Niews.

Merckx started the Tour of Qatar with his business partner Dirk De Pauw and continued to organise it for the past fifteen years. However, financial difficulties forced the cancellation of the 2017 event, to the surprise of many, including Merckx.

Rumors have circulated that the Tour of Oman is also suffering similar financial difficulties.

The 2016 event was uncertain at the beginning of the season with officials saying it could be the final edition.
