Edwin Avila takes opening-day honours in the Tour de Taiwan

by CyclingTips

Colombia’s Edwin Avila (Illuminate) has taken the first leader’s jersey at the Tour de Taiwan after winning the bunch sprint in Taipei on Sunday.

Avila accounted for second-placed Russell Downing (JLT Condor) and Paolo Lunardon (RTS-Monton Racing) at the end of the 83.2km stage in Taipei, while Australia’s Neil van der Ploeg (IsoWhey-SwissWellness) finished fourth.

Rain, tight corners and cobblestones created treacherous conditions for the riders, with many crashing in the final sprint.

The UCI 2.1 Tour de Taiwan comprises five stages and continues today with a 114km second stage that features a second-category climb with 35km to go, and a slight uphill finish. Robbie Hucker (IsoWhey-SwissWellness) won last year’s edition of the Tour, ahead of Francisco Mancebo and Hucker’s teammate (now Dimension Data rider) Ben O’Connor.
