Irish rider Dan Martin will begin his 2018 season on Wednesday in the Volta ao Algarve, with the race marking his first event since moving to UAE Team Emirates over the winter. Previously with QuickStep Floors, he finished second in both Liège-Bastogne-Liège and Flèche Wallonne in 2016, as well as third in Paris-Nice and the Critérium du Dauphiné. He was also sixth overall in the Tour de France despite racing with a fracture to his spine.
“Going in Volta ao Algarve I have a mixture of nerves and excitement,” said Martin. “There is always anxiety to get back to racing and find out where the fitness levels are, but I feel good and have trained well in the winter months. Racing is of course always different.”
He will be joined by new teammates in the race, with Valerio Conti, Vegard Stake Laengen, Jan Polanc, Edward Ravasi, Rory Sutherland and Ben Swift completing the squad.
“It’s exciting to finally pin a number on the UAE Team Emirates jersey and start racing with a great group of guys,” said Martin. “Of course it will take time to learn how to race well together but we already did two nice training camps with lots of laughs and getting to know each other. We have a very strong team coming to Algarve so I can’t wait to get started.”
The race runs from Wednesday until Sunday.
