Field, Payton win cyclocross British Cycling National Trophy

Ian Field and Hannah Payton took the British Cycling National Trophy overall series wins on Sunday, with both claiming victories in the final round in Shrewsbury Sports Village.


Field (Hargroves Cycles-Ridley) took his third victory of the five-round series, beating current British national champion Liam Killeen (Malvern Cycle Sport) by one and a half minutes, and David Fletcher (Sherwood Pines) in third.

“I wanted to put down a marker for the National Championships with Liam being here,” said Field. “I’m going to Belgium for four races over Christmas to sharpen up for it.” Field overtook Yorben Van Tichelt, who did not race the final event, in the series final standings.

Payton (Team Kinesis UK) clinched the elite women’s title with a win by over a minute on second place on the muddy course. ”

“These kind of courses are really about power, keeping upright and keeping safe, so once I had a bit of a lead on the first lap I opened up to about 10-15 seconds pretty quickly,” said Payton. “I had people around the course giving me regular time gaps, so as long as it wasn’t closing I just wanted to stay safe and not make a mistake and come off.”
