Five cyclists have been injured in Brisbane, one critically, after a driver allegedly drove into the path of the riders early on Friday morning.
Local media reports that the car was travelling through Brisbane’s West End at roughly 6:20am when the driver pulled into a driveway to do a U-turn. The group of cyclists was coming the other way at the time. The cyclists, aged between 45 and 55 suffered a range of injuries including broken bones and concussion. A 45-year-old suffered critical head injuries and was taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital.
“We leave Park Road at about 5:15 in the morning, this is our regular route, we come down Dornoch Terrace every Friday and this unfortunate accident has happened,” said Tom Nash, a rider in the group. “We had five of our riders hit by a car, none of them were in a good way at all, so I just hope they’re all OK.”
According to Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman Matt Davis, “potentially the angle of the sun may have come into play. What we do know is the car was essentially turning out onto the road and didn’t have visibility of the cyclists,” he continued. “So that’s, we’re assuming, what’s resulted in the accident.”
