Former junior world champion killed after being hit by a car

Former junior track world champion Lydia Pluzhnikova has died after being hit by a car while out training.

The 24-year-old Russian was reportedly struck by a vehicle driven by an unlicensed 17-year-old male who was driving on the wrong side of the road.

“We bring our deepest condolences to the family, friends, colleagues of Lydia Pluzhnikova, and we intend to participate in the investigation of the incident,” said the Russian cycling federation in an official statement.

Pluzhnikova became junior world champion in 2012 when she won gold in the team sprint alongside Daria Shmeleva.
