French army thermal camera to be used to detect motors at the Tour de France

by CyclingTips

French newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche reports that a military-grade thermal camera will be used at the upcoming Tour de France in an attempt to detect any use of hidden motors.

The camera will be just one of several measures used by the UCI to detect “technological fraud” and will reportedly be attached to a race moto, allowing officials to detect the use of motors mid-race.

While motor checks are conducted at the start and finish of races, there is some concern that riders might be starting on legal bikes before swapping to motor-equipped bikes.

“This problem is worse than doping,” said French Secretary of State for Sports Thierry Braillard. “This is the future of cycling at stake.”
