Gaudin beats Van Avermaet to take prologue at Skoda Tour of Luxembourg

by VeloClub

Beating the better-known Olympic champion Greg Van Avermaet (BMC Racing Team), Damien Gaudin (Equipe Cycliste Armée de Terre) grabbed the first leader’s jersey in the Skoda Tour of Luxemboug on Wednesday evening.

The French rider clocked a time of three minutes on the two kilometre prologue course in Luxembourg, beating Van Avermaet by one second and the latter’s teammate Jean-Pierre Drucker by four.

Gaudin’s past results illustrate why he was in the running for success on Wednesday. Four years ago he won the prologue in Paris-Nice, thus illustrating his speed against the clock. He is also a past winner of the Under 23 Paris-Roubaix and was fifth in the pro version of the race in 2013. He combined those abilities on the cobbled sections of the prologue course to beat the other riders.

The former Europcar and Ag2r La Mondiale rider has been in solid form this year, winning the Tro-Bro Léon and also a stage in the Tour de Normandie.

The Skoda Tour of Luxembourg continues on Thursday with a 172 kilometre race from Luxembourg to Bascharage.
