Gaudu takes first pro victory on stage 3 of Tour de l’Ain, Pinot grabs race lead

The FDJ team were the big winners on the difficult penultimate stage of the Tour de l’Ain, with David Gaudu and Thibaut Pinot riding clear en route to Oyonnax and finishing 55 seconds ahead of their closest rival, Alexandre Geniez (Ag2R La Mondiale).

As anticipated beforehand the mountainous terrain upended the race, with Brice Feille (Fortuneo – Oscaro) leading in three other chasers one minute 10 second back, and a large chasing group another 22 seconds behind.

The fast-twich sprinter’s physique of overnight leader Nacer Bouhanni (Cofidis) wasn’t suited to the terrain and he finished over 20 minutes back. Pinot jumped from seventh to first overall, with Gaudu going from 14th to second. One second separates them heading into the final stage, while Ag2r La Mondiale’s Alexandre Geniez (Ag2r La Mondiale) is third, 56 seconds behind.

Saturday’s mountainous race to Culoz should also suit the duo and their time advantage puts the team in a very strong position.
