Gaviria makes it two-for-two in Poland

by Mark Zalewski

Race leader Fernando Gaviria (Etixx-Quickstep) defended his leader’s jersey, winning a second field sprint in-a-row on the second stage of the Tour of Poland ahead of Elia Viviani (Sky) and Caleb Ewan (Orica-BikeExchange).

Inside 25km to go the day’s break was caught and IAM Cycling’s Marcel Aregger made a solo move. Though he dangled off the front and took some KOM points, Orica-BikeExchange were massed on the front and keeping the pace high to ensure a field sprint. At 15km left it was all back together.

Under the 1km banner Orica-BikeExchange were still in control. But a solo attack from a Cannondale-Drapac rider animated the front and allowed Etixx-Quickstep to take over.

Four Etixx-Quickstep riders drove out of the final turn at 700m and seemed to have things in hand, but the long drag to the line allowed other riders time to organize again.

A three-rider bike throw on the line saw Gaviria take the win by a very narrow margin.
