Gaviria takes first stage of Colombia Oro y Paz; Quintana crashes

Fernando Gaviria lept off a perfect leadout from his Quick-Step Floors team — a leadout so powerful that it gapped all Manzana Postobon’s Juan Sebastian Molano — to take the first stage of his home race, Colombia Oro y Paz.

The first three stages of the new Colombian stage race are primed for the sprinters. The last three stages head into the mountains.

We told you yesterday that Nairo Quintana’s season opener at Colombia Oro y Paz was going to be “calm,” but sometimes bike racing has other ideas. The Colombian went down with four kilometers remaining in the race’s open stage, swapped bikes with his brother Dayer, and made it back to the bunch just in time. He appears to be unhurt
