Gaviria wins San Juan opener in confusing finish with peloton misdirected

by CyclingTips

Quick Step Floors’ Fernando Gaviria opened up his win account in Argentina for the third year running, winning the opening stage of the Vuelta a San Juan ahead of Elia Viviani (Italy) and Nicolas Marini (Nippo – Vini Fantini).

The sprint finish came out of a chaotic final few kilometres which saw half the peloton take a wrong turn. After the dust settled the race jury announced that all riders in the group would receive the same time as the winner.

Gaviria had a first class lead-out from teammate Tom Boonen, which caused a split between a group of five and the reduced peloton. There were questions about who would be Quick Step Floors’ protected rider for the sprints at the race, but apparently Boonen tapped his teammate for the finish.

There are four more sprint finishes on tap out of the six remaining stages, so there could be plenty to pass around.

The newly elevated UCI 2.1 stage race is taking the place of the Tour de San Luis which was unable to organise the funding to happen this year.
