Just days after extending his contract with Trek-Segafredo for another two years, Giacomo Nizzolo has capitalised on the work of his Trek-Segafredo teammates to win the Italian national title.
“Today the race was crazy, I had a lot of friends here cheering for me,” said a jubilant Nizzolo. “I have to give a big thanks to the guys, they did a super job for me today. At the beginning I didn’t feel good, but at the end I was really motivated on the final climb.”
The 228km race concluded with four laps of a 20km circuit, including a steep but short ramp three kilometres from the finish. The final ascent saw a group of five — including Nizzolo — go clear, before Gianluca Brambilla (Etixx-QuickStep) attacked from that group with only Nizzolo able to cover. The pair reached the finish together where Nizzolo outsprinted Brambilla to take the win.
“It is really, really, really an important race for me and I will enjoy the next days and the next year.”
